Q&A with Nicole Modic of Kalejunkie
Nicole must have an assistant working for her. There's no way she's doing it all herself (right?) This gal is insanely talented - she runs her incredible Instagram account Kalejunkie, takes care of two adorable boys and somehow manages to look flawless while doin' it. Um.. tips, please?
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
Hi! I'm a lawyer, beech! No really, I went to law school because I like to learn but wasn't sure I ever wanted to practice law. Then got trapped into the "big law" life and making BANK and thought I couldn't get out. I was trapped, had bills to pay, etc. And I was staying at the office till 1am on the reg. I was moody, unhappy, cranky, you get the point. I was also an exercise fanatic, so that helped relieve some of the stress, but I also restricted my eating a lot and compensated by going on massive binges. Basically my life felt completely OUT OF CONTROL and I felt stuck and trapped.
I finally decided enough was enough. Woke up one day and was like LIFE IS TO EFFING SHORT to be stuck doing something I hate, and resorting to food as a coping mechanism. So I started to cultivate and put a lot of thought towards what I do love - and that is, connection with others, deeply inspiring others, yoga, strength training & healthy food (despite having my own issues). So I started with a yoga teacher training here in San Francisco with Stephanie Snyder. I started seeing a nutritionist, I started 2x/weekly therapy, I started sharing my struggles with my loved ones, and doing a lot of self-work to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. SLOWLY but surely I healed (I wrote a post about this, here).
What was the inspiration behind Kale Junkie?
SO many things. First and foremost, I want others to know that healing from eating issues IS possible, and I can attest to it, having been STUCK in the world of eating disorders for over 15 years of my life. I want to show people that eliminating the refined sugars will help take away the cravings that cause the urge to binge. And that healthy can be easy and taste great! My other inspiration -- my two boys, Gavyn (3 years) and Hunter (10 months). I want them to know that food is healing, and it's never to late to do what you want to do in life. Oh - and that you have a mom that will always support what you want to do (for the most part - lol).
What are your top tips for someone looking to build their personal brand?
BE AUTHENTIC - don't sell out and compromise for $ and share only what you love and are passionate about
SAY NO - say no every once in a while, no one likes a "yes girl" all the time
USE YOUR VOICE - we all have one and the world needs to hear what you have to say
BE PATIENT - it takes time to build your brand, be patient, and if you stay true to yourself, it will happen!
What do you love most about your job?
Freedom and flexibility to build a life around my career. I'm not stuck in a desk job anymore and every day looks a little bit different. And I love that I get to spend more time with my kiddos!
What do you love most about yourself?
My authenticity - what you see is always what you get.
And if you are talking about what part of my body I like more, it's my shoulders/arms :) haha
Take us through a day in the life of Nicole. We want all the deets!
Wake up at 5am to a toddler who jumps in bed, then lots of snuggles with him and the baby! Coffee or matcha, get the boys ready, a workout.
Emails post -workout (always), that way I can go into a workout with a fresh mindset and not be worrying about what emails I need to respond to!
Come home, shower, and recipe development. Photography!
Listen to modules in my functional nutrition course and STUDY
Catch up LIVE with one person each day, even for 5 minutes!
Start to think about what to make for dinner! And hopefully have everything on hand to make it or else a quick pit stop to the grocery store.
Make dinner, and pick up toddler from preschool. We enjoy some time together before dinner and bedtime. (New 2018 rule is no phones until after the boys go to bed - working being more present with them and off the damn phone)!
After they go to bed, I sit and relax - PHEW. It's busy. And then I eat some Honey Mamas or Eating Evolved chocolate and maybe have a glass of wine depending on the day.
Veg out with my hubby, and repeat the next day!
What's on the horizon for you in 2018?
Lots more recipe development! Lots of speaking engagements where I will show people how to make a career change and follow their passions, and also share my story on eating disorder recovery so that others know they can heal too!
And lastly, what makes you feel like a kween?
A killer workout, a mani-pedi, and an almond milk matcha latte date with my fam!
