Q&A with Paige Bourassa, Acupuncturist & Founder of Shen Medicine
I first heard Paige Bourassa on the MindBodyGreen podcast, and instantly fell in love with her refreshing outlook on wellness. She's a licensed acupuncturist and extremely knowledgeable in her field, but remains relatable and approachable. Plus, she believes in staying healthy with some greens, and staying sane with some cheeseburgers. I can get on board with that 100%.
Tell us a little bit about yourself!
I grew up in Vancouver, Canada. There’s a large Asian population there, so I got into Chinese medicine really early from witnessing everything around me. Chinese medicine is great for things that Western medicine couldn’t address. I studied psychology and wanted to blend the mind/body belief systems with psychology.
Can everyone benefit from acupuncture, or is it more a targeted treatment for acute illnesses?
I think everyone can benefit, but even if you don’t have an acute illness, it brings your body back into balance. Disease has less of a chance to sit and harbor and take hold of the body. Its very all encompassing.
What does wellness look like for you?
I'm all about the “it takes a village” approach — it’s not just one avenue. It's looking at the mind-body-spirit aspect to address all parts of my body. Doing energetic work, a therapist for mental state work, massage for physical touch, etc.
Especially in today’s world where we are very isolated, its important to take time for yourself and workout. I eat as clean as I possibly can 6 days a week, and the 7th day I’m having a cheeseburger. Otherwise, you’ll make yourself crazy.
Take us through a day in the life of Paige. We want all the deets!
Waking up and never skipping meditation (20 mins), walking all the dogs, and trying not to look at my screen until meditation and dog walking is over.
Diving into emails/practice-building in the AM and reaching out to people who need acupuncture.
From 1-8:30/9pm I’m seeing patients. It seems crazy but I love it and it’s super fun. Plus, I’ve never had a boring day. For food, I'll have two balanced meals and a bulletproof coffee or juice in the AM.
And lastly, what makes you feel like a kween?
Since I don’t ever pamper myself — I would say getting a facial or manicure once every 4 months. Something beautifying. But more than that, when I’m able to employ another woman, I feel amazing about that. I’m responsible for the salaries of 5 women, which is pretty cool.
